Christmas GP - Race Report

On Friday 27th December, Sheffield RC Racing hosted their Christmas GP, welcoming over 40 racers to celebrate the festive season. The event featured two popular classes, Stock 17.5 Touring Car and MTC, and was held on the club’s new Lindau carpet track. With its wide, fast layout and challenging technical sections, the track provided plenty of opportunities for overtaking.

The meeting followed a relaxed yet competitive format, with one seeding round, four qualifiers, and two finals. The festive GP attracted both local talent and new racers, including several who had travelled from Teesside to take part.

Qualifying

In the Touring Car class, the opening qualifying round set the tone for a fiercely competitive event. Local favourites Ricky Lee (Awesomatix) and Lee Carter (Awesomatix) led the field, separated by just 0.4 seconds. Jay Kay (Mugen) was close behind in third, trailing by only two seconds.

The remaining qualifying rounds saw Ricky Lee extend his lead, securing the top spot with all 4 TQ's. Other strong performances came from Matt Hipwell (Tamiya), David Underwood (Awesomatix), and Joshua Rose (Yokomo), all showcasing impressive pace.

In the MTC support class, Lee Carter took the opening round, but it was James Herring (XPRESS) who dominated the remaining three rounds to claim the overall TQ.

Finals

Lower Finals

The C Final saw a commanding performance from Jason Kahler (XRAY) to take the overall honours. In the B Final, the competition was much tighter, featuring a thrilling battle between Jamie Wicks (XRAY), Ben Gosling (XRAY), Peter Covell (Awesomatix), and Chris Ratcliffe (Tamiya). Consistency proved key as Peter Covell took the overall win with two second-place finishes.

In the MTC support class, it was a flawless display from James Herring (XPRESS), who secured lights-to-flag victories in both finals to seal the class win.

A Final – Touring Car

The first A Final had a dramatic start as Lee Carter suffered a crash on one of the opening corners, forcing him to fight his way back through the field. Meanwhile, Ricky Lee cruised to an effortless victory, with Jay Kay opting for a safe second-place finish.

The second A Final was much closer, but once again, Ricky Lee delivered a masterclass to claim the overall Christmas GP title. This time, Carter avoided early mistakes and finished strong in second place, with Jay Kay completing the podium in third.

At the prize giving, Lee was awarded first, Jay Kay Second and Carter third. However, a post-race review resolved some confusion over the results for second and third overall. Both Carter and Jay Kay finished on equal points, but an incorrect system setting initially placed Jay Kay ahead. After review, Lee Carter was confirmed as the rightful second-place finisher. Apologies to both racers.
